Launch of New CBN Grade BX5015 for Machining of Gray Cast Iron

Iwaki, Japan – June, 2026 – Tungaloy Corporation (President: Satoshi Kinoshita, Head Office: Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture) announces the expansion of its CBN insert lineup with the introduction of the new BX5015 grade, offering 25 new items engineered for superior wear and fracture resistance in low-speed machining of gray cast iron.

Challenges and Trends

Gray cast iron, which is widely used for automotive and agricultural machinery components, requires high wear resistance and dimensional accuracy, making machining stability a critical factor. In particular, large workpieces such as oil pump housings and flywheel housings are structurally limited in chuck clamping strength, making high-speed rotation difficult; therefore, low-speed turning is generally employed. However, conventional CBN grades have been designed primarily for high-speed machining performance, and thus have faced challenges such as short tool life and insufficient stability in low-speed ranges. As a result, there is a growing demand for new CBN grades that can achieve both long tool life and high-quality surface finish even under low-speed machining conditions.

Product Overview

BX5015 is a new CBN grade engineered for extended tool life and stable performance in gray cast iron machining. Combining outstanding wear resistance with excellent fracture resistance, it delivers reliable machining across a broad range of cutting conditions, from low-speed operations to interrupted cuts.

Benefits and Features

Feature 1: Long tool life through excellent wear resistance
– Adopts a new binder with superior heat and oxidation resistance, significantly suppressing wear progression in low-speed gray cast iron machining.
– Maintains stable hardness even at high temperatures, ensuring dimensional accuracy during continuous machining.
– Reduces tool replacement frequency and contributes to lowering total production costs.

Feature 2: Stable machining through high chipping resistance
– A structure with uniformly dispersed fine CBN particles provides a tough cutting edge that withstands impact and load during machining.
– Suppresses chipping even in interrupted cutting or difficult-to-machine areas, maintaining stable machining quality.
– Expands the range of applicable cutting conditions and contributes to improved productivity.

Feature 3: Versatile lineup for a wide range of applications
– The new grade BX5015 is available in 25 items, enabling compatibility with various machining conditions and shape requirements.
