Four Decades of Innovative Machining Solutions in the U.S.
From its origins in early 20th-century Japan to its position today as a global leader in advanced cutting tools, Tungaloy’s story is one of continuous innovation and a deep commitment to manufacturing excellence. This year marks a significant milestone, the 40th anniversary of Tungaloy America, highlighting four decades of expansion and customer-focused solutions in North America.
Humble Beginnings

The roots of Tungaloy trace back to a collaboration between Japanese firms Shibaura Engineering Works and Tokyo Electric Company (modern day Toshiba). In 1929, the two companies successfully developed cemented carbide. This product was introduced into the Japanese market as “Tungaloy”, deriving from a combination of “tungsten” and “alloy”. This development laid the foundation for Tungaloy’s advanced machining solutions worldwide.
Tungaloy was formally established in 1934, becoming Japan’s first company to industrialize cemented carbide tools. Throughout the following decades, Tungaloy’s primary focus was expanding operations locally in Japan. In the 70’s, Tungaloy achieved great success in Japan with its innovative TAC indexable products, which were later introduced globally and helped open the door to international markets.
Expansion Beyond Japan
In 1986, Tungaloy established its first overseas entity, Tungaloy America, expanding access to advanced cutting tool solutions in North America. Following its establishment, the company began building a strong presence across the U.S. Early operations focused on supporting key manufacturing regions in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Texas, with an emphasis on turning solutions.
In 1988, Tungaloy made its first appearance at IMTS, held at McCormick Place in Chicago. This marked a major step in strengthening brand recognition in the U.S. market and establishing direct engagement with customers and industry partners. IMTS 1988 broke attendance records and saw the debut of the first robotic hand.
By the 1990s, Tungaloy had emerged as a leader in high feed milling innovation and expanded its footprint beyond Japan through the establishment of additional global entities.

In 1997, as production expanded worldwide, Tungaloy reinforced its commitment to sustainable manufacturing by achieving ISO 14001 certification. In the mid-1990s, Tungaloy unveiled a new technology at IMTS that was the first of its kind on the market: the coolant-through solid carbide drill.
Corporate Evolution and Sustainability
In the early 2000s, Tungaloy further strengthened its global focus by becoming independent from Toshiba and reestablishing itself as Tungaloy Corporation. Notably, since 2004, Tungaloy has kept the ratio of landfill disposal rate to total waste below 1% (“Zero Emission”), reinforcing its long-standing dedication to environmental responsibility.
In 2008, the company joined IMC Group, a unit of Berkshire Hathaway, accelerating investment in machinery, automation, and R&D. Shortly thereafter, Tungaloy opened its corporate headquarters in Iwaki, Japan, with Warren Buffett attending the opening ceremony of the facility in 2011.

Growth and Leadership in North America
In 2009, Tungaloy America welcomed Russell Flood as president, who has been serving in the role for 17 years. Russell’s extensive expertise in cutting tools spans four decades of experience in various roles as a tool maker, product specialist, and sales engineer.
In 2015, Tungaloy America partnered with Team Penske as a preferred technical supplier. This collaboration highlights the performance and reliability of Tungaloy’s tooling in one of the most demanding environments, professional motorsports.
Tungaloy has continued to drive innovation through its New Product Campaigns, beginning with the 2016 launch of TunGForce, which introduced a major wave of new technologies to expand tooling solutions and meet evolving customer needs. Building on that momentum, the 2021 AddForce campaign delivered next-generation tooling solutions designed to address the demands of modern machining.
Today and the Future
In 2023, Tungaloy and NTK Cutting Tools united in the U.S. as Tungaloy-NTK America, combining expertise to deliver a broader range of machining technologies. This integration reflects the company’s continued commitment to growth in North America and its ability to evolve alongside the needs of modern manufacturing.
Today, Tungaloy-NTK America remains focused on providing high-performance tooling solutions and application expertise, building on four decades of progress in the U.S. market. IMTS has remained a cornerstone event for showcasing Tungaloy’s latest innovations and connecting with manufacturers across North America. Tungaloy-NTK America is excited to exhibit at IMTS this September in the West Hall at Booth 431522.
This year, Tungaloy-NTK America proudly celebrates its Ruby Anniversary, marking 40 years in the United States. We are grateful for the people, partnerships, and innovations that have defined our journey, and remain committed to supporting the manufacturing industry for decades to come.
