Fine-BeamJet – A Revolutionary New BTA Drill Head for Superior Productivity and Performance

Iwaki, Japan – November, 2026 – Tungaloy Corporation (President: Satoshi Kinoshita, Head Office: Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture) announced the development of Fine-BeamJet, a new series of exchangeable drill heads for its BTA deep-hole drilling system.

Challenges and Trends

The BTA drilling system is widely used to produce deep holes in components such as automotive drive shafts and heat exchanger components. Successful BTA deep-hole drilling depends on a high-volume, high-pressure coolant supply. This supply is critical not only for consistent chip formation and effective chip evacuation but also for ensuring predictable wear of the cutting edges, guide pads, and tool body. In conventional BTA drill heads, coolant supplied through the connector and pressure head flows through the outer annular clearance—the narrow gap between the outside diameter of the drill tube/head and the wall of the hole being machined—to reach the cutting area. As a result, coolant flow is strongly influenced by the drill design. This is particularly challenging for tools with a diameter of 30 mm, where substantial heat is generated during machining and the positions and sizes of coolant holes are constrained. Providing sufficient coolant-flow paths while maintaining tool rigidity is, therefore, challenging.

Product Overview

The Fine-BeamJet series features a drill body produced by additive manufacturing. With conventionally manufactured tools, coolant holes are generally limited to straight, circular bores created by gun drilling. Additive manufacturing, however, allows irregularly shaped holes and curved flow channels to be incorporated into the body. This enables the position and shape of the coolant holes to be optimized, maximizing coolant flow without compromising tool rigidity. The Fine-BeamJet series is available in diameters from ø25 to ø33 mm and includes models for both STS (Single Tube System) and DTS (Double Tube System) coolant-supply methods.

Benefits and Features

Feature 1: Optimized Coolant Channels Enabled by Additive Manufacturing
– Additive manufacturing allows irregularly shaped holes and curved coolant channels to be incorporated into the drill body, optimizing coolant paths and increasing coolant flow.
– The increased coolant flow promotes smoother chip formation and evacuation, helping to eliminate chip clogging during machining.
– This improves machining stability, minimizes damage to the cutting edges and guide pads, and extends tool life.

Feature 2: Improved Durability Through Increased Body Hardness
– Higher body hardness reduces tool deformation.
– It also extends body life and helps maintain tight hole tolerances.
