Iwaki, September 2018 – Tungaloy is expanding its DoTwistBall, a profile milling cutter line, to include new insert radii.
DoTwistBall incorporates an innovative design that allows 2 different types of inserts to fit the same shank, each dedicated to profiling and high feed application. The insert is constructed in a helically twisted structure which fits the seat pocket constructed in a matching helical profile. This Twist Clamp system helps maximize insert retention, making DoTwistBall an ideal tool to ensure stable machining in demanding 3D profiling and high feed applications. In addition to renowned 04 (R4.0) style insert, the 05 (R5.0) and 06 (R6.0) style inserts are now added to the standard line.
The radius insert in the -MJ geometry is popular among manufacturers profiling die and mold parts. The insert features a large cross section designed to absorb the brunt of the cutting force, providing higher reliability over the conventional round inserts. The cutting edge integrates a large inclination angle to promote smooth chip evacuation. The addition of the both 05 and 06 styles will further broaden the cutter’s capability.
The high feed insert in the -HJ geometry promotes highly efficient machining through 30% greater cutting depth and feed rate over the conventional high feed inserts. The maximum depth of cut for the existing 04 insert is 1.3 mm or 0.05”, while the new 06 insert is good for as deep as 2 mm or 0.08” per cut, making the tool perfect for various operations including shouldering, facing, slotting, pocketing, and helical interpolating.
Two standard grades include AH3135 for steel and stainless steel as well as AH120 for cast iron, hard or difficult materials, covering a wide range of materials. The cutter body lineup is available in shank type, modular type, and bore type for all three insert sizes with various choices of tool reaches.
